Should Sarge Be Put Down?
- Yes, it attacked someone
- No, it deserves a second chance
- I don't know
The Animal Haven in North Haven announced that one of its volunteers was attacked on Thursday, March 5, requiring reconstructive surgery, with several more planned, the shelter said in a Facebook post. Further information on the victim's condition was not released.
Protocol dictates that the animal be euthanized so veterinarians can study its brain to determine if it had rabies.
The shelter had at first considered euthanizing the dog, but protestors gathered outside the facility on Friday, demanding Sarge be allowed to live.
Since the volunteer is being proactively treated for the fatal disease, the North Haven shelter now believes killing the dog is unnecessary, per its Facebook post.
The dog will remain in quarantine for 10 days to see if it shows signs of the illness.
If it doesn't, Animal Haven will look for other shelters or places that could take Sarge in and care for it.
